Ceiling Painting Services in Hampstead
Smooth Ceiling Painting
A well-painted ceiling transforms the room. Roller marks, uneven sheen, and lap marks are common on ceilings painted without proper preparation or technique.
We prime correctly, work in sections, and finish with a consistent flat coat. Standard ceilings in Victorian terraces across Kentish Town and West Hampstead sit at 2.7-3m — we apply two coats as standard with a full dry between coats.
For a complete room repaint that includes ceilings alongside walls and woodwork, see our interior painting page.
Artex Removal and Overskimming
Artex ceilings are common in post-war flats and some Edwardian conversions. Removal requires care, as Artex applied before 1985 may contain asbestos — we advise on testing before any work begins.
Where Artex is safe to remove, we wet-scrape and overskimm to a smooth finish. Overskimmed ceilings must be allowed to dry fully. We check moisture content before applying a sealing coat.
If new plasterboard is installed after removal, see our plasterboard painting page for guidance on sealing.
Cornicing and Ceiling Roses
Ornate plasterwork on Hampstead Grove, Holly Mount, and Well Road often has significant paint build-up from previous cycles. This fills fine relief detail and flattens the profile.
We strip back where needed and work around detail with a small brush. Ceiling roses are cut in entirely by hand — rolling over a rose obscures detail and produces uneven results.
Coffered cornicing in Georgian dining rooms and drawing rooms requires zone-by-zone application, maintaining crisp lines between coving face, ceiling return, and wall.
Water Damage and Staining
Water staining on ceilings is common in period properties from roof repairs, bathroom leaks, or condensation. Standard emulsion will not cover yellow water stains — they bleed back through within weeks.
We apply specialist stain-blocking primer to affected areas before the finish coat. Before painting over any water stain, we confirm the leak has been resolved. We do not paint over active leaks.
High Ceilings
Principal floor rooms in Georgian townhouses on Frognal, Hampstead Grove, and Well Road have ceilings at 3.5-4m. Stepladders are not adequate or safe at this height — we set up scaffold boards or a hired platform to provide a stable working surface.
Platform setup adds time and cost, which we account for in the quote. See our hallway painting page for more on high-ceiling access in Georgian and Victorian entrance halls.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Inspection
We assess cornicing, ceiling roses, water damage, paint build-up, and ceiling height before any work begins.
2. Access Setup
Scaffold boards or a platform are erected where ceiling height requires it. Stepladders are not used at 3.5m or above.
3. Preparation
Thick paint build-up is stripped from relief detail where needed. Water stains are treated with stain-blocking primer. Cracks and holes are filled and sanded.
4. Priming
A sealing coat is applied to bare or porous plaster. Stain-blocked areas receive an isolation coat before the finish coat is applied.
5. Finish Coat
Cornicing and ceiling roses are cut in by hand. The field is rolled in two coats with a full dry between coats for an even, consistent result.
