Front Door Painters in Hampstead

Hampstead Decorators are front door painters working on timber, composite, and uPVC front doors across NW London’s Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses, and Edwardian semis in Hampstead village, Primrose Hill, West Hampstead, and Kentish Town.
- Timber front doors stripped, primed, and finished in oil-based topcoat
- uPVC and composite doors with specialist adhesion primer
- Door frame, pilasters, and porch surround
- Colour consultation: Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, and heritage ranges
- Letterbox, knocker, and hardware protection during painting
Georgian townhouses on Church Row, one of London’s most photographed residential streets, have classic six-panel softwood front doors exposed at the top of stone steps. These doors deteriorate quickly without proper preparation, and a Farrow and Ball colour applied over poor prep will fail within a season.

Timber Front Doors
Timber front doors are the most common across NW London terraces and townhouses. Original softwood doors have been repainted many times. The existing paint condition determines whether the door needs stripping, keying, or a full prime before the new topcoat.
We use oil-based primer, undercoat, and topcoat as standard. Oil-based systems are more durable on exposed timber and flex as the timber expands and contracts in London’s variable weather.
For interior door painting in the same property, see our door painting page. We frequently combine front door and interior woodwork projects on the same visit.
uPVC and Composite Doors
uPVC and composite doors can be repainted with specialist adhesion primer and appropriate topcoats. Painting without primer does not work — the paint peels within months.
We clean, key, and apply specialist adhesion primer before topcoats. Many clients in West Hampstead and Kentish Town paint uPVC doors to match a new colour scheme, avoiding replacement costs.
Front Door Colour Choices
Front door colour is one of the most impactful decisions on a period property. Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, and Fired Earth offer heritage ranges for Georgian and Victorian architecture. We advise based on the architecture and any planning restrictions.
Dark tones require a strong white or grey undercoat to avoid opacity differences between coats. We discuss colour and preparation requirements at the quoting stage.
Preparation and Priming
Preparation is the single most important factor in how long a finish lasts. A Farrow and Ball colour over sound preparation lasts 5-7 years. The same colour over poor preparation fails within 18 months.
For doors needing a full strip, we use a heat gun or chemical stripper to bare timber. We apply oil-based primer to all bare wood, paying particular attention to end grain at the bottom and at joints or mouldings.
Hardware and Knockers
Letterboxes, knockers, and handles are removed where possible before painting. Fixed hardware is masked carefully. All hardware is refitted before we leave.
Period brass hardware on Georgian townhouses is masked with precision to avoid contamination. Heritage hardware requires careful handling.

Here’s How It Works
1. Door Assessment
We inspect the door material, existing paint condition, and exposure. North and east-facing doors deteriorate faster and influence the paint system we recommend.
2. Preparation
Sound existing paint is keyed with fine-grit sandpaper. Failing or heavily built-up paint is stripped to bare timber. All bare wood is primed with oil-based primer.
3. Undercoat
A full undercoat is applied and allowed to cure. This is the stage at which any remaining surface irregularities are identified and addressed.
4. First Oil Topcoat
The first topcoat is applied by brush, following the grain on flat sections and mouldings. The door is left closed to cure.
5. Light Sand and Second Topcoat
The first coat is lightly sanded before the second topcoat. Hardware is refitted and masking removed before we leave.

Front Door Painting Costs in London
Front door painting typically costs between £350 and £750, depending on door material, condition, and paint system. Call 020 4634 9779 for a precise quote.

Door Condition
Bare timber needs primer, undercoat, and two topcoats. Sound existing paint needing only keying and two topcoats is considerably less work and cost.
Door Material
Timber doors require oil-based systems. uPVC and composite doors require specialist adhesion primer. Each material has its own preparation sequence and cost.
Paint System
Farrow and Ball oil eggshell costs more than standard exterior gloss. The finish quality and durability are noticeably better, and the result lasts 5-7 years on a well-prepared door.
North and east-facing doors deteriorate fastest. Oil-based systems outperform water-based gloss on exposed positions.
Typical Ranges
uPVC front door (Edwardian semi, West Hampstead or Kentish Town): £250 to £450, adhesion primer and two coats.
Victorian timber front door (four-panel, Primrose Hill or West Hampstead terrace): £350 to £600, including preparation. Georgian six-panel front door (Church Row or Frognal, stripped to bare timber): £450 to £750, oil system.
For a full exterior repaint alongside the front door, see our exterior painting page.
