Living Room Walls and Ceiling
We apply two full finish coats as standard, with preparation including filling, light sanding, and a sealing coat where plaster is bare or porous. We use the same tin batch throughout to avoid batch-colour variation.
Victorian terraces often have walls with multiple layers of old paint. Where layers are sound, we paint over them. Our interior painting work covers all period plaster types.
Bay Window Alcoves
Bay window alcoves create complex light conditions. The alcove reads darker than the main wall and benefits from a slightly lighter tone or high-sheen finish to reflect light back into the space.
Painting inside a bay requires accurate cutting in at the ceiling, side walls, sill, and all architraves. It is one of the most cutting-in-intensive areas in a living room.
Chimney Breast
A chimney breast in a different tone to the main walls is the most popular feature request in living room projects. It defines the focal point and frames the fireplace. We advise on tone selection and where to stop the colour.
Deep tones on chimney breasts in north-facing rooms can absorb light. Warm tones, even dark ones, work better than cool dark tones.
Feature Wall
A feature wall works best where there is a clear focal point, such as behind a sofa or above a fireplace. A single painted wall behind seating gives depth without closing in the space.
We advise on panel effects, including dado-height panelling painted in a contrasting tone. This is cut in entirely by hand to avoid tape lines on period plasterwork.
Coving and Cornicing
Cornicing in Victorian and Edwardian reception rooms ranges from simple coved sections to deep, intricate profiles. Cutting in requires patience and steady hand work. We do not mask cornicing.
Where original plaster is friable or powdering, we stabilise before painting. Where sound, we cut in with a steady brush using slightly thinned finish coat to avoid build-up in the profile.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit
We assess light conditions, surface condition, cornicing type, and colour requirements.
2. Preparation
We fill, sand, and apply a sealing coat to bare or porous plaster.
3. Ceiling First
Ceiling is painted before walls. Cornicing and ceiling rose are cut in by hand.
4. Walls and Feature Elements
Main walls are painted, then bay window alcoves, chimney breast, and any feature wall.
5. Woodwork
Skirting boards, architraves, window frames, and mantelpiece are completed last.

Living Room Painting Costs in London
Prices below are estimates only. Every room is different. Call 020 4634 9779 for a precise quote.

Standard Living Room
Victorian terrace in West Hampstead or Kentish Town: £600 to £900, walls, ceiling, and woodwork.
North-facing living rooms need careful colour selection. What looks warm in a showroom can read cold in a room without direct sunlight. We advise on this at the site visit.
Living Room with Bay and Cornicing
Victorian terrace in Primrose Hill with bay window and cornicing: £750 to £1,100.
Three things drive the price: room size, period detail such as deep cornicing and ceiling rose, and paint range. Farrow and Ball or Little Greene adds material cost compared to standard trade paint.
Large Reception Room
Victorian mansion flat in Belsize Park, high ceilings and period features: £900 to £1,400.
Call 020 4634 9779 to arrange a free site visit. For dining rooms with similar period detail, see our dining room painting page.
