Shed and Garden Timber Services

We treat all garden timber structures in NW London, from compact Victorian terrace sheds to large garden rooms and workshops.

Garden Sheds

Standard timber sheds range from compact 6×8 ft structures to large 10×12 ft workshops or storage. We treat all exterior surfaces including boards, cladding, fascias, and roof overhangs.

Most sheds have not been stained for several years. Preparation determines durability, not the stain brand. For a complete garden treatment, we regularly combine shed painting with fence painting and deck painting in the same visit.

Timber Outbuildings

Timber workshops, home offices, and garden rooms are larger structures than standard sheds and typically need more preparation and product.

Cladding types vary. Feather-edge, shiplap, and tongue-and-groove cladding all have different profiles that affect how stain or paint is applied. We assess the cladding type and condition at the quoting stage.

Summerhouses

Summerhouses with glazed sections, opening windows, and decorative boarding require more care in preparation. Glazing is masked before staining or painting.

Window frames and doors are treated as part of the structure. Summerhouses often have decorative fascia and bargeboards needing care to maintain appearance.

Fence and Shed Combined

Combining fence and shed treatment in a single visit is the most common garden timber request. Matching colours gives consistency. We agree the product and colour at the quoting stage.

We also include garden gates, log stores, and compost bays in combined garden timber projects where requested.

Preservative Treatments

Timber preservatives protect against rot and insects on older or vulnerable timber. These clear or lightly pigmented products are applied as a first coat beneath a coloured stain topcoat.

Sheds showing early timber deterioration benefit from wood preservative before a finish stain. For outbuilding work forming part of a wider exterior painting project, we include sheds in the full scope quote.

How We Paint Sheds

1. Inspection

We inspect the shed for algae coverage, rot, soft areas, and the condition of any existing treatment. Soft or rotten boards are flagged before work starts.

2. Mould Treatment

Mould treatment is applied to algae-affected surfaces, left to penetrate and kill the growth, then cleaned. The surface must be dry before staining or painting.

3. Preparation

We sand rough surfaces and apply wood hardener to soft sections, consolidating the surface before staining.

4. First Coat

Stain or paint is applied by brush to all surfaces, including board joints and end grain.

5. Second Coat

Applied after drying time specified by the product. A third coat may be needed on heavily absorbent or weathered timber, discussed at the quoting stage.

What Drives the Price

Shed painting typically costs between £200 and £600. Three things drive the price: shed size, timber condition, and coating type.

A compact 6×8 ft shed is shorter work than a 12×10 ft workshop with windows and doors. Weathered and algae-covered timber needs mould treatment and sometimes wood hardener before the first coat.

Typical Price Ranges

Compact shed (6×8 ft, West Hampstead or Primrose Hill): £180 to £320. Standard shed (8×10 ft, Gospel Oak): £250 to £450, including mould treatment.

Large workshop or summerhouse (12×12 ft, Golders Green border): £400 to £700. Sheds under tree canopy in Gospel Oak or Kentish Town develop algae quickly and may need re-treatment every 2-3 years.

Coating Type and Maintenance

Clear or semi-transparent timber stain has lower material cost than opaque solid colour stain or shed paint. Penetrating stain on a well-maintained shed lasts 3-5 years.

North-facing sheds on Victorian terrace gardens collect algae faster. Annual inspection is worthwhile on heavily shaded structures.
