Wood Painting Services in Hampstead

Interior Hardwood

Interior hardwood surfaces include oak, ash, and walnut flooring, staircases, joinery, and furniture. These are finished with oil, wax, or varnish rather than paint. The correct finish depends on timber species, usage, and preference.

Oiled hardwood needs periodic re-oiling rather than stripping. We advise on maintenance cycles and provide top-up treatments. Scratched or worn hardwood can be refreshed with a light sand and re-oil.

For complete exterior projects that include hardwood fascias and timber boarding, see our exterior painting page. Wood painting is frequently combined with masonry painting on full exterior projects, and with fence painting for garden timber.

Exterior Timber

Exterior timber includes fascias, soffits, bargeboards, window boards, and cladding. Oil-based primer and topcoat is the correct system on all external timber.

Fascias and soffits on Victorian terraces are commonly original or early softwood with multiple paint layers. Where build-up causes delamination, we strip affected sections before repriming.

Staining and Varnishing

Timber staining shows the natural grain. Stain penetrates the surface rather than forming a film. It is used on staircases, doors, and joinery where natural wood appearance is preferred.

Clear varnish is used on hardwood flooring and furniture for maximum protection. Satin and matt sheens are more common than high gloss on period interiors.

Stripping and Restoration

Heavy paint build-up on Victorian skirtings, dado rails, and door casings often obscures the original profile. Where build-up loses moulding detail, stripping to bare timber is correct.

Chemical stripping and heat gun are both used depending on the surface. Chemical stripping is more precise on fine moulding. Heat gun is faster on flat surfaces. We assess at the quoting stage.

Bespoke Joinery

Fitted furniture, alcove shelving, and joinery require a smooth, consistent finish. We work on newly installed joinery from bare MDF or timber, and on existing furniture needing refreshing.

New MDF requires a specific sequence: seal with shellac or MDF primer, apply undercoat, sand, and apply two topcoats. Skipping the shellac seal causes solvents to raise the surface, resulting in a rough finish.

Here’s How It Works

1. Woodwork Inspection

We inspect the paint layers, timber condition, and any areas of damage or accumulated build-up. We identify where a key and topcoat is sufficient and where localised stripping is needed.

2. Preparation

All woodwork is sanded to key existing paint. Dents and gaps are filled and sanded flush. Bare timber is spot-primed. Heavily layered sections are stripped back where build-up is too heavy.

3. Priming Bare Timber

All bare timber is primed with oil-based primer. End grain receives a double prime coat. MDF surfaces are sealed with shellac before priming.

4. Undercoat

A full undercoat is applied, providing a consistent sealed base for topcoats.

5. First Topcoat, Sand, Second Topcoat

First topcoat is applied, cured, lightly sanded, then second topcoat applied. This two-stage process gives a smooth finish. Skipping the sand between coats is the most common shortcut.

Volume of Woodwork

A large Victorian terrace with deep 130mm skirtings, wide architraves, multiple dado and picture rails has considerably more area than a modern flat. It can double the time for the same number of rooms.

Victorian properties typically have 130mm+ skirting boards, wide architraves, and multiple picture and dado rails. We factor this into every period quote.

Preparation Needed

Sound paint needing only key and topcoat is fast. Accumulated layers requiring stripping, filling, and repriming adds significant time.

Typical ranges: interior woodwork only for a 2-bed Victorian terrace (West Hampstead or South Hampstead) runs £1,200 to £2,000. A 3-bed Victorian terrace (Kentish Town or Primrose Hill) runs £1,800 to £3,200.

Paint System

Oil-based systems are more durable on heavily used woodwork but require longer drying times. Water-based systems are faster with lower odour, more practical in occupied properties.

Exterior timber (sash windows, fascias, soffits, front door on a Victorian terrace) typically costs £1,500 to £3,000.
