Door Painting Services in Hampstead

Interior Flush Doors

Flush MDF and hollow-core doors are common in post-war conversions and modern flats across South Hampstead and Swiss Cottage. These are straightforward to paint but require careful preparation where the surface has been damaged or previously painted with a glossy finish.

We key the surface thoroughly before applying undercoat. A smooth topcoat requires correct roller technique and immediate laying off by brush to eliminate stipple. For a complete room repaint including doors, walls, and ceiling, see our interior painting page. We also combine front door painting with interior work.

Panelled Doors

Four-panel and six-panel timber doors are the standard throughout Victorian terraces in West Hampstead, Kentish Town, and Primrose Hill. Each panel has raised mouldings that require individual brush attention.

Build-up of multiple paint layers on panel edges is common on Victorian doors. Where excessive, we strip back to bare timber before repriming to avoid a lumpy finish.

Door Frames and Architraves

Door frames, linings, and architraves are part of every project. Clean cutting-in at the junction between architrave and wall is a mark of quality. We do not use masking tape.

Period architraves in Georgian and Victorian properties often have deep profiles and ogee details requiring patient brushwork. Missing moulding sections can be filled and recreated in fine filler before painting.

Fire Doors

Fire doors require specific products. We only use paints rated for fire doors. Fire door edges must be painted with care to avoid sealing intumescent strips.

We advise on fire door requirements at the quoting stage and carry appropriate products as standard.

Wardrobe and Cupboard Doors

Fitted wardrobe doors and cupboard doors are often overlooked during repaints. We include these in door painting projects where the client wants a consistent finish throughout.

Bi-fold wardrobe doors and hinged cupboard doors are handled using the same preparation and topcoat system as standard internal doors.

How Door Painting Works

1. Surface Assessment

We inspect each door for accumulated paint layers, timber or MDF construction, and any damage that needs filling before painting.

2. Preparation

All doors are sanded to key the existing paint. Dents and gaps are filled and sanded flush. Bare timber or MDF is spot-primed before the main undercoat is applied.

3. Undercoat

A full undercoat is applied to all doors and frames, providing a consistent base and identifying any remaining irregularities.

4. First Topcoat

The first topcoat is applied and allowed to cure. Flat areas are rolled and immediately laid off with a brush. Panel mouldings are painted by brush throughout.

5. Light Sand and Second Topcoat

The first coat is lightly sanded before the second topcoat, removing nibs and texture for a cleaner final result.

Door Type

Flush MDF doors are faster than four-panel or six-panel Victorian timber doors. Panelled doors have moulded edges requiring individual brush attention. Flush interior doors in a set of 6-8 typically cost £70 to £120 each.

Preparation Required

Keying existing paint is quick. Stripping accumulated layers from Victorian doors, particularly in moulding recesses, adds significant time. Four-panel Victorian doors in a set of 8 typically cost £110 to £160 each including frame.

Number of Doors

Per-door cost reduces for larger sets. A full house of 10-12 doors is more cost-effective than a single-room project. Six-panel Georgian doors in a set of 8 or more typically cost £150 to £220 each including preparation.
