Exterior Painting Services in Hampstead
Masonry and Rendered Walls
Grade II listed Georgian townhouses require breathable masonry paint. Impermeable coatings on lime-mortared brickwork trap moisture and cause damp.
We specify breathable masonry systems on all lime-mortared and lime-rendered facades. Biological growth, including algae and lichen, is treated before painting. For more, see our masonry painting page.
Windows and Woodwork
Timber sash windows need careful preparation. Failed glazing putty is replaced first, frames sanded back, primed with specialist primer, and finished with flexible exterior gloss or eggshell.
Sashes are removed where necessary, painted separately, and refitted once dry. For full detail, see our window frame painting page. We also offer conservatory painting for timber-framed and rendered conservatory structures.
Front Door and Porch
Panelled doors need multiple preparation stages. Old paint is stripped or sanded, grain is filled, and high-build undercoat applied before topcoat. We use oil-based and water-based finishes depending on construction and preference.
Farrow and Ball and Little Greene exterior finishes are available. For details, see our front door painting page. For masonry and render painting on listed facades, see our breathable systems guidance.
Fascias, Soffits, and Gutters
Painted timber fascias and soffits are common on Victorian and Edwardian properties. Rotted sections are identified and flagged before painting. We do not paint over rot.
UPVC fascias and soffits can be painted with specialist adhesion primer and flexible topcoat. Cast-iron gutters are wire-brushed, treated for rust, and painted to match the colour scheme. For aggregate finishes and pebbledash painting, a different approach is needed.
Garden Walls and Outbuildings
Rendered garden walls follow the breathable system approach. Outbuildings are painted to match or complement the main property. Timber fencing is handled under our fence painting service.
Sheds and garden structures follow the same process as our shed painting work. We treat all exterior surfaces as part of a single project and quote them together.
Garage Doors
Garage doors are painted as part of the exterior scope. Timber up-and-over and side-hinged doors are prepared, primed, and painted in gloss or satin to match the wider colour scheme.
For a dedicated service, see our garage door painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We assess the facade, identifying surface type, render condition, areas of biological growth, and any structural repair needed before painting.
2. Surface Preparation
Walls are cleaned, biological growth is treated, loose render is cut back, and cracks are filled with compatible mortar or filler. Preparation is the most time-critical phase.
3. Priming
Timber receives a specialist primer on all bare surfaces. Masonry receives a masonry primer where needed, particularly on new render or heavily repaired sections.
4. Paint Application
We plan around weather. Work pauses in rain, frost, or below 5°C. Two coats are standard. North and west-facing facades receive an additional coat where required.
5. Inspection and Touch-Up
We inspect completed work from ground level and scaffold. Touch-up follows before scaffold is struck.

Exterior Painting Costs in London
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 020 4634 9779 for a precise quote.
Surface Area and Height
A five-storey townhouse has four times the wall area of a two-storey terrace. Access cost is significant on taller properties.
Exterior painting in NW London typically costs between £1,800 and £15,000, depending on property size, height, and surface condition.
Surface Condition
Lime render in poor condition needs repair. Timber with rot needs replacement. These are necessary preparatory costs.
Properties near Hampstead Heath face more wind-driven rain. North and west-facing facades need a more durable paint system than properties further south.
Typical Cost Ranges
Rendered facade of a 2-storey Edwardian semi (Compayne Gardens, West Hampstead): £1,800 to £3,200. Full exterior of a Victorian terrace (Kentish Town or Primrose Hill): £3,500 to £6,500.
Full exterior of a 5-storey Georgian townhouse (Hampstead village, Frognal or Church Row): £9,000 to £15,000+. For combined work, see our house painting page.
