Pebbledash Painting in Hampstead

Hampstead Decorators paint pebbledash and pebble dash surfaces across North London. We prepare the surface properly, fill areas where pebbles have detached, and apply two coats of breathable masonry paint.
- Pebbledash upper storeys — the most common configuration on 1930s–50s semis
- Full-house pebble dash — all elevations, access by scaffold or tower
- Surface repairs — filling voids where pebbles have detached
- Moss and algae treatment — biological growth on north-facing walls
- Colour changes — breathable masonry paint in any colour
Pebbledash is common on 1930s–50s suburban properties in Finchley and Muswell Hill, on detached and semi-detached houses along roads like Nether Street, Woodside Avenue, and Colney Hatch Lane. These properties often have pebbledash on the upper storey only.

Pebbledash Painting Services in Hampstead
Pebbledash is not painted the same way as smooth or fine-textured render. The heavily textured surface demands a long-pile masonry roller and careful application to fill every crevice.
How Pebbledash Is Painted
Pebbledash is not painted the same way as smooth render. The surface is heavily textured — small stones embedded into a base coat create recesses that a standard roller cannot reach.
We use a long-pile masonry roller worked in carefully so paint fills the crevices. Where spray equipment is used on large elevations, it is followed by brushwork to ensure full coverage. Two coats are standard. Pebbledash consumes more paint per square metre than smooth surfaces and this is factored into every quote.
Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface
Pebbledash on 1930s and 1950s properties in Finchley and Muswell Hill is often north-facing. Biological growth such as green algae, black mould, and moss is a regular feature. Painting over this without treatment does not fix the problem — the growth returns quickly through the new coat.
We treat affected areas with a mould treatment before washing, giving sufficient dwell time, then pressure wash the whole surface. We do not start painting until the surface is genuinely clean and dry.
Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting
Over time, areas of pebbledash lose their surface pebbles at exposed corners, around window and door surrounds, and on elevations that take the most weather. These voids need filling before painting — a new coat over bare areas simply highlights the damage.
We inspect the whole surface before starting. Areas where the pebble texture has been lost are filled and shaped to blend as closely as possible with the surrounding finish.
Partial Pebbledash: Upper Storey Only
Many 1930s and 1950s semis in Finchley and Muswell Hill have pebbledash on the upper storey with smooth or fine-textured render below, or brick at ground floor level. Hampstead Decorators handle upper-storey-only jobs as frequently as full-house repaints in this area.
Access to the first floor typically requires a scaffold tower, which we include in the quotation. The lower section can be left or painted separately depending on the client’s plans.
Colour Options
Pebbledash colour changes are among the most dramatic exterior transformations possible. A house with the same cream or grey finish for twenty years looks completely different after a colour change.
Warm white, soft grey, and earthy tones are popular choices. Hampstead Decorators can colour-match or work from a palette you’ve already chosen, including RAL and BS colour codes.

How We Paint Pebbledash
1. Site Assessment
We inspect the surface condition: biological growth, detached pebbles, cracks, and access requirements. We quote at this stage.
2. Surface Treatment
Mould treatment applied where needed, followed by a thorough pressure wash.
3. Repairs
Voids and areas of missing pebble texture filled and shaped to blend with the surrounding finish.
4. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, and surrounding surfaces masked carefully. Pebbledash creates spray and splatter during application.
5. First Coat
Long-pile roller and brush, working paint into the crevices. Full coverage confirmed before moving to the second coat.
6. Second Coat
Applied once the first coat is fully dry. Final inspection before we leave.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Hampstead
Prices are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 020 4634 9779 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Range
Three things drive the price: surface coverage, surface condition, and access requirements.
- Upper storey only (typical on 1930s–50s semis in Finchley and Muswell Hill): £600–£950
- Full-house pebble dash, all elevations: £900–£1,600
- Large detached properties fully pebbledashed: £1,300–£2,400
- Scaffold tower hire for upper floors: £200–£400 additional
What Affects the Price
Moss and algae growth on north-facing walls extends preparation time. Significant pebble loss requiring extensive filling adds one to two days. For a wider exterior refresh, see our exterior painting and masonry painting pages.
