Staircase Painting Services
Balusters and Spindles
Balusters and spindles are the most time-consuming part of any staircase repaint. Each requires individual brush attention — rollers cannot reach the detail on turned period balusters.
We work from top flight down, completing each flight before moving to the next. For interior painting projects that include the hallway, we often combine the staircase with hallway painting to achieve a consistent finish throughout the entrance.
Handrail and Newel Post
Handrails take the most wear of any staircase surface. We use oil-based eggshell or gloss systems for durability. Newel posts at landings receive the same preparation.
End grain on cut newel post tops is primed twice before topcoats to prevent absorption irregularities. This is a detail that is often missed but shows in the finished result.
Stair Risers and Treads
Painted risers are common in Victorian and Georgian townhouses with original pine boards. Treads are typically stained or oiled with painted risers creating contrast. Where treads are painted, we recommend hard-wearing floor enamel.
We assess each tread for condition before starting. Soft or damaged timber is filled and spot-primed before the main finish coats are applied.
Understairs Area
Understairs cupboards and storage are often overlooked. We include the soffit, walls, and shelving as part of a complete repaint. Ceiling painting in the stairwell is often combined at this stage.
Tight access to the understairs void requires careful masking of floor and wall surfaces. We protect all floor coverings throughout.
Victorian and Edwardian Staircases
Victorian and Edwardian staircases often have 5-8 paint layers. Localised stripping may be needed where build-up causes flaking or detail loss. We assess this at the quoting stage.
Church Row and Frognal townhouses have among the most detailed staircases. Multi-flight runs with carved newels and turned balusters require skilled, patient work.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Inspection
We assess existing paint condition, spindle detail, and access requirements per floor. We note any bare timber, flaking areas, or spindles needing localised stripping.
2. Preparation
All surfaces are sanded, filled where needed, and bare timber is primed. Accumulated paint on spindles is assessed and stripped where the build-up is too heavy.
3. Working Floor by Floor
We sequence the work floor by floor to keep the staircase accessible. Fast-curing products allow overnight use between coats.
4. Spindle and Baluster Brushwork
Every spindle is painted individually by brush. No rollers or shortcuts. This stage shows the most visible difference between careful and hurried work.
5. Final Inspection Per Flight
Each flight is inspected in raking light before we move on. Touch-ups are done before the second topcoat, not after.

Staircase Painting Costs in London
Prices below are estimates only. Every staircase is different. Call 020 4634 9779 for a precise quote.

Number of Flights
A single-flight Victorian terrace staircase is a straightforward job. A five-storey Georgian townhouse with four flights and landings is four times the work.
Staircase painting typically costs between £800 and £4,500, depending on the number of flights, spindle count, and surface condition.
Spindle and Baluster Count
Open-tread staircases with many turned spindles require individual brush attention on each one. Closed-string staircases with no spindles are faster.
A five-flight staircase with 120 balusters is fundamentally different from a single-flight staircase with plain string sides.
Surface Condition
Sound existing paint needs keying and a new topcoat. Bare timber or heavily layered old paint needs filling, priming, and additional undercoats.
Single-flight staircase (West Hampstead or Kentish Town): £600 to £1,100. Multi-flight Georgian townhouse (Hampstead village): £2,500 to £4,500.
Typical Price Ranges
Single-flight staircase (Victorian terrace): £600 to £1,100. Two-flight with landing (Edwardian semi, Belsize Park or Primrose Hill): £1,000 to £1,800.
Multi-flight staircase, 4-5 storeys (Georgian townhouse, Hampstead village): £2,500 to £4,500. Call 020 4634 9779 to arrange a site visit and fixed-price quote.
