Wallpapering Services in Hampstead

Single-Wall Paper Hanging

Feature walls behind beds, sofas, or fireplaces are the most common request. We hang from a plumb line, match the pattern centrally, and finish seams cleanly.

Surface preparation matters as much as hanging. Filling, sanding, and priming are done before the paper goes up. For painted feature walls as an alternative, see our feature wall painting page.

Full Room Wallpapering

A fully papered room requires consistent pattern matching, level drops, and tight seam alignment. We work methodically from first drop to last, maintaining accuracy.

Period flats often have high ceilings and original cornicing. Interior painting and wallpapering can be combined in the same project.

Lining Paper

Lining paper is hung horizontally before finish paper or paint. It bridges minor irregularities and provides a consistent base for even adhesion.

On Victorian plaster walls with minor cracks, lining paper is often the most cost-effective solution. It avoids replastering and gives a smooth base.

Period Properties and Cornicing

Original cornicing creates a precise line where wall meets ceiling. Getting the wallpaper to sit cleanly requires careful trimming and steady cutting.

Curved plaster walls in bay windows and staircase bays are not plumb. We establish a plumb line independently and work from that, rather than following the wall.

Wallpaper Removal

Stripping old wallpaper from lime plaster walls differs from stripping plasterboard. Lime plaster absorbs water and must not be over-soaked. We work carefully to avoid surface damage.

After stripping, we assess the wall condition. Filling, sanding, and lining paper may be needed before new paper or paint.

How We Hang Wallpaper

1. Surface Assessment

We visit the property and check the wall condition, height, and surface type to establish what preparation is needed.

2. Lining Paper

Where the surface needs it, lining paper is hung horizontally and left to dry fully before any decorative paper is applied.

3. Adhesive Selection

Adhesive is matched to the surface. Lime plaster requires different adhesive than plasterboard. Wrong product causes seams to lift within weeks.

4. First Drop and Plumb Line

We establish a plumb line independently and hang the first drop from it. Pattern matching is set at this stage.

5. Pattern Matching and Cutting

Each drop is cut and matched before hanging. Large-repeat papers are planned to minimise waste at visible sections.

6. Seam Alignment and Smoothing

Seams are smoothed firmly and checked as each drop is hung. We don’t leave seams for later correction.

Single Feature Wall

A single feature wall in a Victorian terrace in West Hampstead or Primrose Hill typically costs £350 to £700. This includes preparation, lining paper if needed, and hanging.

Full Room

A full room in a Victorian mansion flat reception in Belsize Park ranges from £700 to £1,400 for a standard pattern. High ceilings and original cornicing add time.

Hallway and Staircase Landing

A hallway and staircase landing in a Victorian or Georgian property in Hampstead or Primrose Hill costs £800 to £1,800, depending on height and pattern repeat.

What Drives the Price

Three things drive the price: pattern repeat (large repeats mean more waste), surface height (staircase landings and 3m+ ceilings take longer), and wallpaper removal (stripping from lime plaster adds significant prep time).
